Customer: Frank
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Type of the project: Smart Home Automation
Devices Involved: Powerpal (Victoria Government–issued), Custom-programmed ESP32 microcontroller
Platform: Home Assistant, Powerpal Cloud
Background
Frank already had a Powerpal energy monitor, provided for free by the Victorian Government prior to 2024. Like thousands of Melbourne households, the Powerpal was already installed in the switchboard, making it a convenient and familiar energy-tracking solution.
However, Frank was also building an advanced smart home environment—including smart cameras, lighting, climate-control automation, and security sensors. He needed continuous, reliable, and fully local energy monitoring that would integrate seamlessly with Home Assistant.
Challenge
While Powerpal is a great free device, it has one major limitation:
Powerpal Limitation
- Requires pairing with a mobile phone via Bluetooth.
- The phone then uploads energy readings to Powerpal Cloud.
- If the phone leaves the house or loses connection, the graph stops updating, resulting in broken or incomplete energy data.
For someone with a fully automated home, this “phone-dependent” design prevented 24/7 monitoring, analysis, and automation triggers.
Solution: Custom ESP32 Microcontroller Integration
We designed and programmed a custom ESP32 microcontroller chip to operate as a fully autonomous, always-online Powerpal gateway.
How the ESP32 Solution Works
- The ESP32 connects directly to the Powerpal over Bluetooth—no phone required, retrieves the Powerpal Data.
- The ESP32 collects real-time energy pulse readings 24/7.
- Data is simultaneously fed directly into Home Assistant for local dashboards, automations, and long-term statistics.
This transforms Powerpal from a phone-dependent sensor into a permanent, real-time smart meter.
Outcome
1. True 24/7 Real-Time Monitoring

Energy usage updates continuously—even when nobody is home and no phone is nearby.
2. Seamless Home Assistant Integration

Frank now has:
- Real-time power graphs
- Daily/weekly usage breakdown
- Automation triggers based on load
- (e.g., alert when high usage detected, or turn off appliances automatically)
3. Improved Smart Home Value
Energy data is now an integrated part of his broader smart home ecosystem including:
- Smart cameras
- Smart lighting
- Climate automation
- Kitchen Kettle
This added functionality increases insight, efficiency, and control across the entire home.
Customer Benefit Summary
| Feature | Before | After (ESP32 Integration) |
|---|---|---|
| Powerpal works without phone | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| Continuous energy graph | ❌ Breaks when phone leaves | ✅ 24/7 real-time |
| Home Assistant compatible | ❌ Limited | ✅ Fully integrated |
| Part of smart home ecosystem | ❌ Isolated | ✅ Fully connected |
By integrating a customised ESP32 microcontroller with Frank’s existing Government-issued Powerpal, we converted a limited smartphone-dependent device into a high-reliability, always-online energy monitor. This enhancement adds significant value to any smart home—especially homes already equipped with intelligent lighting, climate control, and security systems.
This project demonstrates how combining low-cost hardware with custom firmware can elevate everyday devices into powerful smart-home components.
It also proves that smart home solutions can be added to your existing home without any need for knockdown, rebuild, or major renovation. Modern wireless sensors, retrofit smart switches, and intelligent controllers like Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi devices allow seamless installation using your current wiring and infrastructure. This means you can enjoy automated lighting, climate control, energy monitoring, and enhanced security regardless of whether your home is brand new or decades old—bringing the convenience and value of a fully connected smart home without disruption, construction work, or expensive structural changes.
